In what came down to one of the final matches, the squad from Southern California edged out its Northern Cal opponents in the annual Maze Cup competition for the 27th consecutive year. With the matches all tied at 10-10, sets were tallied and SoCal was awarded the victory in the event played at the Alpine Hills Tennis and Swimming Club in Portola Valley.
In the clinching match, SoCal’s Gage Brymer brought home the victory by defeating NorCal’s Andrew Ball in a boys’ 18s match, 6-2 6-7(6) 1-0 (retired due to cramps). The girls’ 16s doubles was the last match to finish with NorCal’s Hadley Berg and Mary Closs defeating SoCal’s Elizabeth Profit and Alexis Pereira, 6-4 1-6 6-3.
The SoCal team was captained by Jim Buck and the team was coached by Erik Kortland and Maureen Diaz. Other players included: Deiton Baughman (Carson), Logan Smith (Carlsbad), Gregory Garcia (Poway), Sterling Galli (San Diego), Alyza Benotto (Beverly Hills), Jana McCord (San Diego), Emma Higuchi (Los Angeles), and Amber Park (La Canada)
The Maze Cup is a prestigious annual team competition that includes both boys' and girls' 18s and 16s divisions. The event is played using a five-match Davis Cup/Federation Cup format, singles and doubles (four singles and one doubles). On court coaching is allowed. The site of the competition rotates between Northern and Southern California.
