UCR, University of Redlands and CMS are the only remaining four-year university tennis programs in the Inland Empire, as, one by one, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal Baptist and La Sierra universities have all cut their varsity tennis programs. Losing the programs and associated scholarship opportunities is one thing, losing actual courts just adds insult to injury. The Inland Empire has a strong cadre of junior tennis players who, in one way or another, would like the opportunity to play tennis through college. UCR students formed a Tennis On Campus club program 3 years ago that gave players who were not on the varsity team, the chance to form friendships and continue playing while at UCR. This opportunity might also be in jeopardy.
Please contact UCR at
AthleticsRFPC@ucr.edu to strongly protest any discontinuation of the Men’s Tennis program and removal of the tennis courts. Community outreach is a two-way street – let’s show UCR that the Inland Empire tennis community is ready to support varsity and recreational tennis programming on campus.
